I have a question for you... and this question will be the most important question that can be asked of you. Are you ready? This is the question. What is it in your head, that is looking at the period at the end of the question mark right here: ? Do look at the period at the end of this sentence. What is in your head that is looking at the image of the period, that is falling upon your retina and is being transported back into the rear of your brain?
Are you having a difficult time articulating an answer? Well, don't be too upset, because I have asked five psychologists over the years the same question, but in a different way. I asked them: What is it that is in your head that is looking at my face right now? Three of them were silent for a while, with one just staring at me, the last started talking some psycho-babble. It was evident at the time that their training did not prepare them for that type of question.
What it is that I am trying to get you to see here is your own awareness, consciousness or perhaps soul, (the word "soul" is fraught with religious connotations and therefore I resist using that word) For some of us it is a difficult thing to "see" or comprehend, because it is "you". Think about it for a minute or two. Go outside and look at a star, or the moon, and ask yourself the question: What is it in my head that is looking at that image of that star or moon.
Many years ago, I told this to a young man who, once he caught on to what I was trying to show him, namely I was trying to show him his own "self", the very essence of what he is. He said, " Oh! Oh! Oh!" This is the reaction that some of you may feel too, once you see that I am trying to get your own "awareness" to become aware of itself! Another name for this "thing" inside of you is your consciousness, so that I could ask you to become conscious of your own consciousness.
The same question can be asked about the other senses. When you listen to sounds,or music, what is it in your head that is hearing the music, when you smell, taste, or touch something the same question can be asked! The answer is your awareness or consciousness. It has always been there, and it is there now. It is you.
Now that you know about your own awareness, you can do some fun experiments! Try this... keep your eyes on this screen, but move your "awareness" down into your right big toe..... now with still keeping your eyes on this screen move your awareness into your left big toe.... cool huh!
Now try this, pull your "awareness" back up to the screen and focus that awareness down to this little tiny period at the end of this sentence. Now with keeping your eyes again on the little tiny period at the end of this sentence, move your "awareness" (not your eyes) to the keyboard, so that your "awareness" is viewing what the keyboard looks like when it is on your peripheral vision.
It is a very sad thing that almost all people spend their entire lives without knowing of themselves! Yes, YOU are really here! And now you know where that "you" is!
